Fusing together found and invented imagery, tags and assorted objects Barry McGee draws on a range of influences including the Mexican muralists, tramp art, the graffiti artists of the 70’s and 80’s and the San Francisco Beat poets to create a unique visual language. The work has the strong immediately recognizable visual signature of the best graffiti art, but is also enormously poetic and evocative. It communicates the artist’s strong empathy with people who have been left behind by contemporary society. Also known by his street name, twist, Barry McGee has a large following in the street art community. He has been working on the streets of San Francisco, his native city, since the mid 1980’s where his images continue to endure on walls, mailboxes and other surfaces despite the continuous campaign of public authorities to paint them out. McGee has long resisted showing his works in museums and commercial galleries but he has recently become more active ion the conventional art world context.

“By subverting corporate iconography, former skater punk Ryan McGinness has built a reputation as a Warhol for the 21st century.”—Black Book

“McGinness has knocked the stuffing out of the spare, modernist white-cube concept of a gallery and filled it with his own brand of art: ornate, jazzy pop visions that spring as much from graffiti and corporate logos as they do from art history.”—Boston Globe

“Color and form explode from the corners of Ryan McGinness’ slick, graphic mindscapes. His unique and accessible visual language is generated by his imagination and day-to-day environment. Layering images and symbols, McGinness’ cacophonous microcosms express his reality as much as our own.”—Zink

Langerado 09′ Canceled

The Langerado Music Festival- hailed as one of the best festival’s of last 2008- decided that they needed to change the festival’s location from rural camping on the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation to an urban festival in Miami, Florida. The festival in Miami was supposed to last three days, with no camping options. The lineup released for this year’s event was met with a number of groans and strong disinterest by some the festival’s biggest fans.

Langerado 2008-a overall success-included big festival acts like Phil Lesh/311/Les
Claypool/Medeski,Martin,and Wood/STS9/The Wailers/Dark Star/The New Deal/Russo/Railroad Earth/Perpetual Groove/and the New Mastersounds
(ALL NOT RETURNING FOR 2009).

The dismal 2009 lineup included less heady headlining acts such as Dashboard Confessional, Death Cab for Cutie, Slightly Stoopid, Against Me!, Flogging Molly, Ryan Adams and a number of other acts that culminated into a lineup that included a little of this and a little of that, but no overall lineup that would rival the years upcoming festivals.

They are blaming the cancellation on the weakened economy, but my thoughts are that the whack ticket sales were due in part to a way too “all over the place” lineup and the new Miami concept. Maybe they will right the Langerado ship for next year, but for 2009 good riddance.

Promoter Ethan Schwartz released this explaination:

“Langerado has always put the fan experience first. Unfortunately, during these difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, it’s become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events. Putting Langerado on hold was the toughest decision we have ever had to make. We are very grateful for the support of the greater-Miami community and the music community during this difficult time.”
